The Virtual Revolution Episode 1 – The Great Leveller: Explores the origins, history and impact of the Internet and World Wide Web (WWW). From its Cold-War military origins in the 1950′s, through its evolution as a meeting place of the 1960s hippy/libertarian movement, to its modern-day incarnation through the genius of Tim Berners-Lee and other like minded pioneers. Segment 1 (10:00 min)
Interesting. The internet as a leveller was never going to last forever to start with. It may have some what democratised the playing field, but at the end of the day, it is created by man, let’s not forget that. The weaker and/or the more ordinary would drop out or fade into the background, the institutions and establishments would make their voices heard the loudest. But just like the discovery of the brave new world, the more negative aspects of the human nature as well as man’s intrinsic spirit for survival, hope and re-inventions will keep playing out in the virtual landscape…a tug-of-war of sorts where there is no winner. And I think it is a privilege to be witnessing this and be part of this great marvel or even a new civilisation in our life time. :)
Yes, it is kind of neat to be able to see significant things that move our world in a certain direction. And changes seems to come quickly now… It’s odd that the virtual landscape is shaped by our minds and not our physical body as in the recent past.
