China’s Coal Country Under Pressure

For years critics have blamed China – the world’s largest producer of greenhouse gases – for not doing enough to prevent global warming. But recently Beijing has ramped up efforts to improve its environmental record, closing coal-fired power plants and shutting mines that had kept tens of thousands employed. Al Jazeera’s Melissa Chan travelled to coal-rich Shanxi province in central China and reports on the difficulties the closures are causing.

    I guess they better start heading for Shanghai…

    the mentality in China that the needs of the many outweigh those of the few has often created situations like this. In contrast the mentality in the US and even Canada that nobody should suffer economically as a result of the quest to reduce greenhouse gas emissions has lead to our countries becoming major road blocks to change….
