Vietnam Farmers Paid Not to Farm

Giving money to poor farmers not to cultivate the land may sound a strange way to lift people out of poverty but a pilot project in Vietnam is aiming to do just that. At the same time, the project aims to preserve the environment and benefit the local economy. Al Jazeera’s Divya Gopalan reports from Lam Dong province in Vietnam’s Central Highlands. (2:44 min)

hmmm… I have mixed feelings on this one. On the surface it seems quite progressive and I know that the natural environment in Vietnam has been under great stress just because of the sheer numbers of population. However, bringing more people into the monetary based system allows them to consume more resources and simply shifts the environmental stress to some other locale.
