Rebuilding Giant Buddhas of Bamiyan Afghanistan?

In 2001 the Taliban swept through Afghanistan’s Bamiyan Valley. Their target was the colossal stone Buddha statues which had stood for over 1500 years. The world watched powerless as one of its true wonders was lost. In Rebuilding Bamiyan Al Jazeera’s Nadene Ghouri travels to Bamiyan to explore the restoration work being done on the site, and to talk to those planning to rebuild the statues. Segment 1 (12 min)

such a beautiful place! some really fantastic cinematic shots in this piece.

what an act of brutal ignorance this was! its a nice gesture to rebuild, but anything done now is just going to be a cheap imitation. I guess there is some symbolism in it though. Hmmm, any bets on round two of the destruction?

Yes, the destruction of the giant buddhas was probably one of the most idiotic things anyone has done in recent years… and that’s saying a lot. However unfortunate it was for all mankind, I don’t think it should be rebuilt and despite this report, I do not think they will try.

THat documentary does not seem to be on the web.

One of the world’s most dangerous countries but also has some of the most beautiful landscapes. Yea, I don’t think they should re-build, not just yet anyway. I think the priorities should be finding peace and restructuring the country, not former cultural and historical glory.

Yes, I agree on the priority and also someone’s comment in the video that anything rebuilt will just make it like a Disneyland.
