The Stockholm Solution

Is a century of psychoanalysis completely wrong? Ever since Freud, eating disorders have been considered psychiatric ailments. A revolutionary theory has turned this on its head. A Stockholm clinic is asserting that diseases such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia are not psychiatric illnesses at all, which means they require radically different treatment. In defiance of conventional medicine, the clinic offers what may well be the Worlds first ever cure. This is on a par with the invention of penicillin. (36 min)

oh my…this is interesting…you would never know it to look at me today, but I got very very thin when I was in high school…I counted every calorie and exercised obsessively….not to the levels of these girls…but i got so weak at some points I’d get dizzy taking a hot shower…it started off with a simple diet…self esteem (or lack thereof) is a very powerful thing….

Wow, you’re right, you seem so strong now, one would never guess. But I suppose that’s the thing they leave off is that there must be at least some self esteem, weight fixation issue that is psychological. It is odd that the clinic chooses to leave it out completely and even seem to deny that there may be that connection. Maybe in that denial, it takes the pressure off the patients, unlike traditional treatments where the emphasis on their psychology seem to make them worse. It’s an odd conflict but I guess if it works, more places should adopt some of their ideas.

hmmm…I don’t think their ideas are bad….once you go without eating properly for quite some time, it is something you have to re-learn, that it is ok to eat (most of these girls are terrified of gaining weight, so they need to be convinced that they can eat a healthy level and be ok)….but at some stage, you need to also address the self esteem issue…i would imagine it is usually there lurking somewhere….their methods seem to work and that is what is important…
