I’ve always founf this issue quite disturbing. The least worrying factor for me is how the food will affect my own body. I am more worried about the high use of chemicals in the growing of the foods and most importantly about the grip that Monsanto has over farmers with their patents. The cronyism and insider links to government was taken to new heights under GW Bush…

I know I have mentioned this documentary “Big Sugar” before which raises so many similar issues…

This is one giant smorgasboard of fucked-upness. From turning a source of life into a source of death (engineering plants to secrete pesticides), to patenting life forms, to posing a massive threat to biodiversity and third-world farmers, these guys take the absolute biscuit, as we say in England. Not only that, but you know Plan Columbia? (spraying not only coca crops but pristine rainforest, killing Ecuadorian children, you name it… Monsanto gets massive subsidies from that as it’s the firm’s Round-Up Ultra that’s used… madness. I ran a piece on the spin that surrounds this at Common Dreams, check it out if you’re interested… http://www.commondreams.org/view/2009/03/26-4
