I’m curious how old this report is? I’m thinking things may have improved since this was breaking news…
It’s surprising that a state so rich as yours could be in this position. It’s also sad to see that greedy people want to put the blame and largest cuts on the poorest members of society. I really dont understand that… why would you want your fellow man and by extension the place where you live to suffer? The thing I noticed when we were recently there is that there is a very concious effort to show tourists only the beautiful parts of society. Everywhere we went everything was perfect, well groomed and idyllic. And the poor underbelly of society was always kept out of sight. In Canada I find that the society is not so strictly segregated and we dont mind paying taxes so much as long as it builds a better society.
Also, its so disheartening that these right wing talk radio commentators wield such power to spread hate and whip people into a frenzy. Scarily though my parents listen to that stuff and they dont even live in your country! The world is changing, its inevitable for a whole range of reasons… why not make the change easier rather than scapegoating other people because the old way of living is unsustainable? (sorry, just rambling now)
Also, I know we’ve discussed this host before… Avi Lewis comes from a very famous family in Toronto. He’s probably one of the most respected young (our age) and activist journalists in the country. I know he has been working for Al Jazeera for about 2 years now…

as a side not, Canada’s budget deficit for this year was in the range of $60 Billion. I guess the difference is California doesnt have the power to print money.
I also dont get Obama’s position on this. It would be a drop in the bucket to make this problem go away. I hope he’s not doing it for partisan reasons because Arnold’s potential replacement is slightly more scary…
