ha ha… this makes me want to go back since I lost all my pictures… and definitely leave the tour group and fancy hotels behind.

have you been on a tour group before? the only time I have was going into China years ago…how tragic that you lost your pictures…oddly, the only place I’ve been in Thailand is to Phuket for a long weekend…a big regret as we were sooo close in Singapore…

Yes, I was in a tour group because it was the only way to get into Russia at the time, two years after the fall of the Soviet Union. It was probably best because the country was not set up for tourism. Even Saint Petersburg did not have a lot of restaurants.
There’s a lot of places to explore in Thailand. It’s one of my favorite places in the world. Thailand always feel very safe so it is not intimidating to explore.

yes, same thing with the China trip I took…and agree, Thailand felt like a very safe place to me as well…

Yes, I guess it’s true for most of Asia. There were places in Java where I did not feel as safe.

My maternal great-grandmother was Thai, and my paternal grandparents who came from China lived in Thailand most of their lives. As a child we used to cross over to Thailand a lot and I have wonderful memories of family cooking up a storm whenever we got together. Till this day Thai cuisine is one of my favourites.
As a place though, Thailand doesn’t interest me as much as other countries, but I think that’s mostly due to familiarity.

Chaun, the range of your cultural experiences is just staggering. This is the first glimpse of you Thai connection… Thank you. I do think that we are more interested with things less familiar and perhaps take for granted things that are.
