I absolutely love this! I spend the first 14 years of my life in the most islamic fundamentalist state in Malaysia and unfortunately its influence on me had been largely negative. As non-muslim we were the minority and the only way to appreciate anything Islam was to become one which of course came with a host of stigma and implications. I did a few courses in interior architecture in college but it wasn’t until I saw how beautiful and intricate the Islamic art and architecture were in Egypt and Morocco, that I was completely bowed over. I want to find some time to study it a bit more in the future, preferably before I go to Central Asia or Africa again.

Yes, I think it was Spain, Turkey and Tunisia for me that triggered the admiration for Islamic architecture and a curiosity for the cultures that brought it about. Another gorgeous and related documentary is is When the Moors Ruled in Spain.

even though time is very short for me these days, I couldnt pass up this topic. For me Islamic art is one of the great jewels of human history! This was a very good documentary but only touched the tip of the iceberg with the several examples mentioned here…
I really love the romance of that mud brick structure in Mali, though I didnt realize that it was sucha young structure. It reminded me of the 500 year old mudbrick city of Shibam in Yemen. Do you know of this place?

Yes, the Shibam mudbrick city is fascinating. I can’t believe it goes back for 500 years.
Yes, I think we love Islamic architecture because it brings that whole romance of the imagery of 1001 nights.
