Freud + Maslow = A potent marketing mix.
A very interesting episode and there’s much to digest and discuss. I am, however, struggling to find the right words - it could be that time of the night and because I have watched this over a few days, my opinion seems to be a bit fragmented, so do pardon me…
I do think that some conformity is healthy; after all it is what makes a community, a society, a culture, and to a large extent the moral fabric of humanity. A simple example would be: upon receiving a gift, if it is the norm in one’s society and culture to say thank you and if they refuse to for the sake of being a non-conformist, is it not a break-down of common courtesy or is it an expression of individualism? Take this in a more complex scenario and are we not looking a place where everyone is king and queen of the jungle?
Now it’s all very well that each of us is entitled to self-expression and the concept of being ‘me’, but to my mind, societies that excessively glorify individualism usually do it at the expanse of community and togetherness.

I see you are well versed in psychology… Yes, what makes this series so powerful is that it very clearly describes the ill effects of self glorification (especially when one is being manipulated to do so) but at the same time to pay homage and importance to its growth and expressive. The nuances do not make it easy to judge one way or another. What it does suggest is the need for balance and the middle way. Throw away the ISMs I keep saying, and strive for equality and sustainability.
