Afghanistan: Failure of Expectation

Spring marks the beginning of the fighting season in Afghanistan, and as Afghan and western forces prepare for the Taliban offensive, others will be preparing to battle the country’s second greatest threat - poppy. (6:12 min)

But eradicating Afghanistan’s most prolific and illicit crop will be hampered by past missteps and what Afghan farmers perceive as a lack of understanding when it comes to the problems they face.

    clearly if the government or western allies can not live up to their promises the farmers will not trust them or have any alternative to growing poppies. Corruption is another difficult problem to fix… corruption is least common where the economy is good and wages are high so there is a bit of a catch 22 loop going on here. Interesting statistics they posted at the end…
