interesting find… I didnt know anything about this. Shades of the Killing Fields. I think there are variations on this theme going on all over the world… where choice of crops is decided by their dollar value rather than the basic needs of society.
Even here in Niagara which has always had diverse fruit farming, there is a significant change over to growing grapes for wine. Clearly there is more money in that, but a society cannot survive on wine alone! The last remaining fruit cannery is closing down and we will now buy canned fruit from Thailand instead of locally.

I’ve been hearing more and more about this lately, in a variety of countries….it seems the cost of many staple foods is rising due to lack of supply as farmlands are diverted…
