On April 9, 2008 in San Francisco, the Olympic torch relay was rerouted to avoid the massive protest for human rights grievances against China. With the Olympic Games in Bejing, the eyes of the world are on China to see how its government will handle disputes and protests against its policies.
There were supporters for Darfur, Uighur, Vietnam, Burma but the majority of people came out to support the Tibetan cause. The Tibetans themselves were organized, passionate and vocal so they spearheaded the protest. Because of the potential for a clash between the protesters and China supporters, the organizers changed the route so most people who came out did not see the Olympic torch.
Tibet is a plateau region in Central Asia and the home to the indigenous Tibetan people. With an average elevation 16,000 ft., it is the highest region on Earth and is commonly referred to as the “Roof of the World.” Tibet was once an independent kingdom but today is part of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). As an exclusive mandate, Tibet is also officially claimed by the Republic of China (Taiwan). However, the government of the People’s Republic of China and the Government of Tibet in Exile still disagree over when Tibet became a part of China, and whether the incorporation into China is legitimate according to international law.
