The John Coltrane Quartet (John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, Elvin Jones) in 1963, on the television program Jazz Casual, playing Alabama which Coltrane recently wrote.
Coltrane released the album Live at Birdland in 1963. Despite the title, only the first three tracks were recorded live, the rest were studio tracks. Among the studio tracks is “Alabama” a tribute to three children murdered in an Alabama church by white supremecists. The album’s original pressing accidentally included a false start – this was corrected in later copies, but some listeners prefer the original pressing, which adds further drama to the song.
